Partagas Serie Privada No. 1 – TotT

Written by feltedhat on . Posted in Cuban Cigar Review

Another “Tasting of the Titans” (TotT). This time a fellow titan brought a box of Partagas Seleccion Privada No. 1 from 98 and since we knew this upfront, we all knew that we were in for a treat.

Like always we met at Urs Portmanns shop in Kreuzlingen and Urs Portmann even joined us in the lounge later on. After exchanging the latest news (not only cigar related πŸ™‚ ) we grabbed a quick bite at a small Chinese take away in Konstanz and headed over to the lounge.

That night we were treated with a special beer from Belgium that was made “a la mode champagne”. The Deus “Brut des Flandres”. I never had anything like it and was very pleased as it felt fresh and yeasty. Great stuff! The cigars and the tasting sheets were passed around and again the next few minutes were filled with a magical silence as everyone is busy writing down the impressions and setting his mind straight for the experience to come. The cigars were eventually light and we started to chat again.

I guess there is not much I can say about the Seleccion Privada No. 1. Only that I hate the fact that I do not have a dozen of boxes stacked of them in my humidor! This was an excellent smoke! The well stored/aged cigar was a delight to smoke for me and judging from the comments and the tasting sheets my fellow titans had the same impressions except one who might have received a sub-par cigar. I found it to be showing the attributes I like Partagas so much for as it was peppery, leathery and a little earth was there as well. It reminded me of one of my favorite Londsdales, the Partagas Lonsdales, but it was more elegant and refined. A true gem amongst Habanos cigars and I am surprised one does not see this cigar show up in the very first spots in reviews, books and magazines!

After the “serious” part was over some of us smoked a Hoyo Regalos EL from 2007 offered by the always generous Urs Portmann to finish up this very nice evening.

Again I am left to thank my tasting panel and Urs Portmann for the cigars, the beer, their time and for the great time spend with them! I am already looking forward to the next time we meet!!!

    Nice report, as always.

Why don’t they show up in the top 10 of the magazines? Simple explanation from my side: they’re resting in the humidors of true aficionados who’ve been aware that it’ll be a classic one day. They’re hard to get and I’m sure that nobody wants to share it with one of those tasting panels of a magazine as a freebie. So would I. See it as an invitation to smoke one of mine together in the future.

Stupid question btw: how can it happen that I have boxes of those and you don’t? πŸ˜‰
