You know I am sucker for packaging. I admit I have bought cigars just because I liked the box. This aspect of the hobby really gives me additional joy.
But the best packaging for me – hands down – are ceramic jars! Not only are they a nice variety and a very classy way to store your cigars. I personally feel that storing cigars in a jar helps the to develop and get the best out of the flavor profile. Maybe only compared to cigars stored in tin foiled bundles.
I even use non-cigar jars to store some of my favorite cigars and when I open up the lid the sent coming out of the jar is breath taking. And so far all the cigars I keep in jars have come alive. Difficult to describe but you look at them and they are not as flat looking when stored in a dress box for the same time. Now of course putting a machine made Jose Piedras in a jar does not convert it into a Sir Winston but I believe that the micro climate that is preserved in a jar preserves the cigars very well and favors the taste. But I might be a bit biased just because I like jars so much.
Jars have been around for a long time. The Partagas Sevilla jars are a good example. And luckily we have seen quite a few new releases of cigars in jars over the last ten years. Some distributors even create releases of standard cigars in jars. Very treasured are my Portmann jars as well – and not just because of the ceramic if not because of the content. Last but not least there are jars released as accessories that make very nice decoration and storage pieces. And since I am a huge fan I welcome this development very much.
A last thought on jars: Some say you can use jars like table top humidors and many come with their own humidifying device in the lid. But like most special humidors I feel they are not air tight enough for that and a jar should always be kept inside of a proper humidor if not the cigars tend to dry out.
If you are not already going down this road I suggest you get yourself a nice jar, put some cigars in it and see for yourself if it does the trick for you. 🙂
